Specifically games that allowed the body to move and encouraged human interaction.
I always liked playing house. I loved playing a pregnant mother. I'd stuff all my toys inside my shirt and pretend to give birth to them, screaming and wailing all the way. We also had a game called heaven-earth. It's a vertical movement tag-your-it game where the players have to climb somewhere higher than ground level so the 'it' couldn't tag him.
I'm guessing I'll have a hard time convincing my future children to let go of the joystick and go out and get muddy. I think there are some important things learned, especially by children, when they play outside the virtual realm.
So, what's your favorite children's game?

responses and comments:
We used to play 'tag' and 'freeze-tag' as well as hide and go seek, especially at night. These were a lot of fun, especially when a lot of children were involved. We also played football (American style), baseball and kickball quite a bit. Another childhood game was "Red Rover." In this game, children would form two lines about 25 yards from each other. All the children in each line would hold hands, forming a human chain / wall. The object of the game was for a child from one line to try to "break through" the interlocking hands of two of the children in the opposing line. If they broke through, they got to choose a child to bring back to their own line. If the couldn't break through, they would join the opposing line. Did you play this game, galatea? Oh, we would also play "war" of some sort, pretending to shoot each other, etc. Whenever we were playing with girls, we would play house and dress up. It was fun, even though we usually wouldn't admit it to other boys. That's funny to me that you would act like you were pregnant, along with the screaming and wailing!! These days, I laugh when my children say, "I'm bored." [Transdisc]
I don't remember playing red rover exactly but a version of it called base to base, I never got to understand the game fully because there too many different things going on while one team is trying to steal or get back another person. As for the TMNT, I went to my cousins' house once, I was the only girl among 3 boys and after watching the turtles' movie we ended up having the grandest and most acrobatic pillow fight I ever had. They never insisted on me being April though. They even cut up a mask for me. Now my cousins and my sister play the most boring games in my opinion. haha. They never really get to run around but just sit in front of some gadget. [galatea]
I used to love playing kiss chase, especially at school! So it was kind of like tag, but if you got tagged you got kissed. I used to love getting kissed by the girls, hardly surprising I know. We also used to set up our own little rounders team at lunch time, girls against boys, fun times indeed, we were very imaginative in our play and would do a lot of pretend play, like being robots and playing lightsabres like Star Wars with sticks, those were the days! [wolfie34]
I used to chase the boys until I got them cornered and they'd scream for help. I never kissed them though! I liked picking on them which was weird now that I think of it. I was sort of the head of the class, class prez etc, but my gang was always the most mischievous of the lot. We played all sorts of rough games so I always wear shorts under my school uniform because we'd end up scaling fences and running away from the victims of our pranks. [galatea]
We used to play three main street games. There weren't many cars on the road in those days and where we lived was a dead end, so we were relevantly safe. The three games we played were Hopscotch, One Two Three Red Light, and What's the Time Mr. Wolf. lol. Those were the days, huh? Brightest Blessings. [Darkwing]
Lol... sounds like fun. We were lucky in that if we couldn't play on the quiet end of the street, we had a huge green area just across the way, with loads of safe room to play. [Darkwing]
When I was a kid my friends and I played a game where we picked a headstone at the cemetary (preferably a really old one) and made up a story about the person's life. Essentially you "won" if your story was voted most interesting. Kind of geeky and morbid, I know, but it was fun. =) I suppose my favorite "moving around" game was hacky sack. We played a really mean version called peg where if you dropped the sack everyone got to take turns throwing it at you. Great, eh? [lecanis]
I think that's a lovely sentiment actually! [lecanis]
ah! childhood those good old days shall never return Hm i was lucky to have a colony buzzling with kiddies of my age.Its was so much fun just after tutions. We even had gardens at our disposal right inside the colony. I remember always digging the eath so i can find some hidden treasure. Hide and seek was the most happening game. We had slides which we enjoyed. I loved making shapes out of wet earth. I had a fetish for playing as a father rather than a mom i hated to do household work and loved to be a man.I use to ride my bycycle and pretend as if leaving for work Its was so funny my other friend lves to cook so she became the mother always. Well this is all i can remember now but the memory still brings a twinkle to my eyes. Oh!yes we use to get all enveloped in mud too,get wet in the rain ah!i wouldnt let my child do so now.Thats mean i know but the conditions are changed i see the safety of my child first my colony was a safe place.Yet,maybe with the child i shall to become a baby and throw all my inhibhitions to air and roll in the mud!!Who knows. [coolimrose]
Now that dogging on the earth I can remember. We used to get muddy all the time. Playing in the rain would be my favorite. Standing directly under the edge of our roof so I could get max water flow. [galatea]
I played many things when I was a child. I also played tag-your-it and heaven-earth and playing/acting as adults. I also played hide-and-seek, chinese garter, 10-20 and a lot more. Its really fun and memorable. Playing before is simple unlike today. Almost all children involves in playing computers and gadgets rather than that requires physical movements/actions. Happy postings! Have a nice day! :-) [aileen527]
LOL! Yes, I also played those games! It was really fun! I remember in playing jackstones we have different styles in picking up the stones. Then in pick-up sticks, it requires a lot of concentration. :-D Then in siatong, oh my, I only played it for several times. It was fun though. Then base-to-base, :)) its really energetic and fun to play. I also remember, we also play/act karate & wrestling. It was really fun. Hehehe, my cousin who is 5 yrs older than me when I try to hit him in karate he would always stop me/hold me on the forehead so I can't reach him. :)) It was really silly. He's not fair. :)) [aileen527]
too many to list that one sounds fun though I spent my whole childhod outside pretty much, well 60% maybe skating, skateboards, softball, kickball, tennis, football, hiking in woods and along streams I used to invent games too. One of them is really good, we still play it. I used to fall in the pond every year, the ice would be an inch thick and we would have to test it. [kurtbiewald]
Those were better days when kids did acrobatics every day. Imagine falling in the ice cold water every year! My sister these days would benignly sit down in our sofa and play with her spongebob plushie. Nothing wrong with spongebob but there must be something else creative to do for a nine year old. [galatea]
there were lots of games that i played as child and I can't list all of them. But I do remember playing mommy, a presenter for my sister and also i would play teacher with my mom. I couldn't pick my favorite game as a child they were all my favorite. [ShereeRamos]
The games we played co-ed were definitely different than the games we played all-girls. Our Co-ed games included all different varieties of tag, basketball, soccer, and softball. We also played really physical games of four-square, red-rover, and steal-the-bacon. The games I played with just girls were a little less physical than the co-ed games. We played tether-ball, volleyball, jump rope (complete with rhymes), and hop-skotch. A lot of the times were spent playing house or school. [vebela]
I only recognized gender when I was already in 4th grade. The kids in my neighborhood played anything that came into our minds. I remember we'd set-up a beauty parlor and the guys would gamely act as gays pretend-styling our hair. When the guys thought up of a war game, I just loved it because I loved running after then and making them scream, I think I had fast legs before. After 4th grade we became young ladies and young men or so our health teacher said. But we still stole our way to the playground and did all crazy sorts of games. [galatea]
I use to play hide and seek, tag, red rover, and ghost in the gravyard. I loved ding dong ditch those people would get so mad! lol One time a guy came out of his house with a shot gun... then again we were playing at 2:00 am lol. He told my dad that we shouldnt be knocking on doors and ringing door bells that late. My dad told us not to play ding dong ditch on him anymore. We use to play house but it was more demented, I think we got it from Jerry Springer.... dont know why I watched that at that age, lol. Then we did gymnastics a lot too, and ride bikes to see who could do a wheely the longest. We would go exploring in the woods too, made teepees and club houses. [SweetTrix]
Yea no problem! Yea we always played ding dong ditch on the same block, so aftre a couple days they knew it was us. But we didn't care, it was kinda fun eventhough they knew. Yea the only thing that gave us away was that me and my friends ran into a neighbors yard and my sister was dumb and ran into ours! That how the guy knew where we lived. She cant live it down to this day, we always ask her why she did that and laugh. We could have gotten away with it! [SweetTrix]
I used to like play adventurous games. Most of my playmates were boys so we would play hunting games physically strenuous games. We even play a mini Olympics type of games. But my most loves game of all was the cooking game- where in I get to cook something. Each of us would usually bring an ingredient like salt, rice, some herbs and spices then some would bring wood or charcoal and set up the cooking station. Then we would look for a clean used can- like a can of powdered milk which will serve as our cooking pot. Then I would start to cook and dictate the things that I'm doing just like in the cooking show. After the food has been cooked- we eat it. We make sure that everything that we use is clean so we don't get diarrhea after or even food poisoning. I also liked playing Miss universe we had some older playmates, they were like in highschool and we were in elementary, and every Saturday they would organize a mini pageant for us kids- even the guys (the confused ones!) are allowed to join. It really is a mini pageant complete with crowns, sash, scepter, and even a bouquet of garden flowers (by garden flowers I mean- santan or bouganvilla or hibiscus or gumamela). a modeling show except for swimwear, a talent portion and a question and answer portion. IT really was fun. [catcai]
Now that your said it, I remember that my mom set up a tent for me and she bought a set of earthenwares, a pot and a stove. I surprised them once by cooking sinigang. They never thought I could learn to cook in that little pot. After that they let me do my own thing in the real kitchen and the little tent was folded up. I must admit that cooking in the tent was much more fun that cooking inside the house; in the tent I was playing but in the house everything became a chore! Haha. [galatea]
I played patintero, marbles, softball, volleyball, chinese garter and lot more... Now I played online game... [Lannie]
during my childhood years i used to play with my robots since im the only son i cant play with my sisters, usually before i went to my nieghbors house just to play with friends. [tedmark]

We got out & about a lot playing games as kids, there being no TV. We played hide & seek of course, insiude & out. As we got older, the hide & seek went all the way up the street. Playing war games occasionally were fun... bows & arrows.. We built cubbies; we just loved these. We played in the block next door where all the bushes were. We liked monopoly too. [jennybianca]
No TV and no internet. That was the best recipe for a good physical game. I had so much fun thinking up new games to play with my friends, new strategies and all that. [galatea]
hmm.. in young days. its used to be fun.. i used to play a game called as twix.. that used to be so diffrerent and so funny that who watches the game will wutomatically get interest in getting into the game. it used to be so funyy.. [chakky99]

[nidlove]
hey nidlove (hug!) yeah there are some moments when being a child s*cks but still when we think back, there are things worth remembering, something that will make us smile. I was never good with chinese garter but I played anyway because it was fun and I was with my friends. It was easier to make friends when we were kids. [galatea]

hmm ususally played football nd cricket in ma child hood !!! [aquarian1986]
True, it'll be hard for the next generation to appreciate physical childhood play which does not need much but, imagination. My favorites are hide and seek, especially in big houses in our provinces, 'tumbang preso' where you have to tip the can over with slippers so that the 'it' in the game can't tag you, basic dodge ball, 'Moro-moro', 'sipa' or 'sepak', 'luksong baka' or 'luksong tinik', and that's just about as much as i could name. I can still remember a few but, I'm no longer sure on their names anymore. Those were good times.. [ratyz5]
I am a guy and when i was a kid i used to play marbles with a bunch of my friends. During those days i guess that's one of the best outdoor games we as kids get to enjoy. When i grew abit older, then i got a bicycle from my parents as a gift and then it went from marbles to cycling to play catch with my bunch of friends. Those were the days. [rickytan]
im really a playful kid back when my chilhood years. i used to play barbie dolls and some kitchen stuffs, if i have some playmates outside like my neighbors i used to play with them hide and sick because i love playing that game. [mariz08]
I used to play langda, kho-kho, kabaddi, rugbi, cricket& all other ttypes of games which i don't remember now. Well i think if you are indian you might be knowing all these games. Specifically games that allowed the body to move and encouraged human interaction. I always liked playing in house. I loved playing a pregnant mother. I'd stuff all my toys inside my shirts & pretend to give a birth to them, screaming & wailing all the way. We also had a game called heaven-earth.It's a vertical movement tag your it game where the players have to climb somewhere higher than ground level so the 'it' couldn't tag him. i am guessing i'll have a hard time convincing my future learned, especially by children, when they play outside the virtual realm. so what's my favourite game? [vinu123]
well when i was a kid i used to play so many games.too bad kids of this generation are more involved with their playstations and their x-boxes.when i was a kid i used to love playing hide and seek.we lived in an appartment and our whole colony will gather together and have a lot of fun.we used to play it in a school nearby.there were so many places to hde and it used to be real fun,not for the one who seeks though.it was really fun.we played a great deal of other games too.another of my favorite is lock and key.it was a real fun game.wish i could have those days back. [dbeast]
I practically lived in my roller skates. I had a "cape" and was Batgirl most afternoons. LOL Another favorite was my bike-I loved to ride. The third would be baseball-I loved to play. [browneyedgirl]
i liked to play hide and seek, catch me if u can, cricket, marble, top , etc [pava1326]
Hi galatea...hws u???? well u had choosen nice game on your childhood....it's really sounds quite funny... In my time i always use to become doctor especially surgeon and keep on doing operations of all of my friends as doctor(surgeon) do....once i remember when i was in 3 standard...i'm playing same game with on of my friend in her house..she was my class-mate..i ask her to take out his whole dress and i'm doing operation.....u know she still remember all that and now she itself a doctor (professionally)....and now we both laugh when we recall all past.... [aditya_tanha4u]
I personally think that the virtual realm is not healthy for children. They do have to be exposed to it no doubt but if too much time is set aside for this, they will miss out on their whole childhood! The games i played include treasure hunt - the winner is the person who found the most treasure, hot & cold, marbles, 'chapteh' - weighted fathers bounced using your feet, 5 stones and congkak (pronounce as chong-kak). These games were a lot of fun and it helps us burn off our energy. Social skills and teamwork should be introduced while they are younger so that children do not grow up being a loner. - Lyn [camar_lyn]
Hi galatea, thank you for the best response. Really hope your kids get muddy soon! hehehehe By the way, are you ready to join them ? *GRIN* - Lyn [camar_lyn]
Twister, hop scotch, jump rope, double jump rope, king of the hill, tag, racing games, tree climbing, nature hikes, ect. I was an active child, no so much as an adult. [mrsjumppuppy03]
Hi galatea, You probably wont be familiar with the games I played as a child. But Im going to typed them down anyway. As a child I enjoyed playing ball tag, bull rush, Bat down, long ball and stick ball, netball and softball and most off all we like to play, marbles, hop skotch, double dutch and elastics lol... [Nardz13]
