When my hubby and I met in July of 1990 he like to play computer games as a way of relaxing and unwinding. For years I could never understand what gaming gave him. Then gradually I choose to open my mind and see things from his perspective. I started out with things like Bejewlled and Zooma. Then he put the first role-playing character development game called Fate. After that it did not take me long to realize that creating a character, having them go out on quests, then developing their skill points and attributes was really FUN! So needless to say I got my feet wet and began to appreciate why people play these games and find the level of enjoyment they do.
That was a few years ago and I must admit this gal who admittedly thought gaming was a big waste of time now uses it to relax her busy 'thinker' brain. Now I openly admit that playing computer games is one of my many favorite activities and a wonderful break from the work I do as a thinking, problem solving life coach, writer and group leader.
So you know that I play computer games, which ones and how often? To answer my own question I enjoy role playing one such as Titon Quest, Loki, The Witcher, Silvervall and a new one David and I got for Christmas..Hellgate. So I would be most interested in hearing how fellow Mylotters fell about gaming and if you play which ones do you enjoy and how often do you play them in a day, week or month? My play time varies by how much work I have and some of the time I used to have to play is now take up with my other favorite pass time...Mylotting and chatting with all of you. Look forward to hearing from you. Maybe you can put me onto a new game I haven't tired yet!!!

Yes, I enjoy playing computer games. You may be surprised to know that when you play games, you are doing more than just relaxing. You are increasing your time management and multitasking skills. It is really interesting to know that you researched it and put it out there for others to learn. I often wondered about what skill sets gaming provides. With Hellfire it is a step up for me because it is a 2-d shooter style and I have to use my left hand to manipulate the keys for movement use the mouse to fire and defend. I know that kind of thing really enhances eye-hand coordination and left/right brain synchronization. I've played a lot of games, of both the console gaming and computer variety. Since you mentioned this in terms of computer games, I guess I'll keep my answer in that realm. :P The first computer games I played were when I was a kid. We played a couple of games at school, like Oregon Trail and Lemonade Stand... but at home my dad was writing games for me, as well as buying me games. I had several different "Pong" versions, one of which involved a castle with enemies and everything, as well as things like Dig Dug. Later on I got games like Seventh Guest and Myst, which were both kind of puzzle/adventure games. After I moved to Michigan, I started playing MUDs, which were basically just text-based multiplayer roleplaying games. I don't know what got me started on MUDs when there were already decent graphics-based roleplaying games out at that point, but I found them lots of fun. On a few of the MUDs I played, I became about as well-known as I am at mylot, before finally I moved on from them. The Sims had me captivated for quite a while, and I actually upgraded my computer in able to run The Sims 2. I love those games because they let you be in control of other people's lives, and there are so many options you have in creating your people and having them interact with others. It's like living a ton of little lives at once. I've also played several of the Mechwarrior games, since I love the Mechwarrior tabletop roleplaying system as well, and I'm really fond of a game called Hereos of Might and Magic 3. I played a few different online games: Gunbound and Ragnarok most notably. :) However, my favorite computer game over the past few years has been World of Warcraft. There are so many options for building and advancing your character, the world is huge and interesting, and there are so many different kinds of people you can meet there! [lecanis]

The first time I ever played a computer game, was when I was 16 years old, and my step dad bought the game Myst. At first it didn't seem to be all that interesting, since I was basically still into the whole Dungeon & Dragons thing where you had a group of actual people that you could interact with in the real world. lol! After my step-dad talked me into sitting down and actually playing Myst did I really get into the whole computer gaming thing. Even though in most games you really don't have the human interaction, unless it is one that can be played over the internet, I found myself getting pulled further and further into the game Myst until I finally beat it and was hooked lol. Now I have played the games Diablo, Beyond Atlantis, and have only just begun getting into the World of Warcraft. I've really gotten into the adventure type games so I don't know how long my fascination with the World of Warcraft will last, but figured I would see what all the fuss was about. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of time to play games anymore or really get online to play online games, so I am surprised with myself that I still hold such an addiction to computer gaming. I was not aware that newbies are treated that way on internet gaming sites. I can appreciate why you wouldn't like being treated that way...a point I will tuck away for future reference. I play computer games and console video games. Whenever I can, but it shares a balance with other interests and hobbies. Recently I got back into World of Warcraft. Overall with games, there is winning yes (especially in competitive games). But with games there are also stories, really good ones (RPGs). Then there are puzzle games for thinking and reflexes, and party games for all around fun. All of it is great! Uh not only that Raia, you've seen my posting and discussion. The brain runs at 120% ON AVERAGE! I need distractions and video games are a good outlet (along with art, lite science research, swordplay, nightgazing, music... and the rest). [theprogamer]
You are the third person who has mentioned Warcraft during this discussion. I am not familiar with it and do not play on-line games. Good to know that you have found one that you enjoy. For me it can be a challenge to balance my love of gaming with the many other hobbies, interests and work commitments I have. David and I are both self-employed so it is easy to play a lot and not work as much when we get new games to try out. However, overall we are generally successful in balancing our work and play time. I agree with you about the games being a great channel for the busy brains syndrome. From the sound of it you have well-rounded interests and that is a healthy approach for anyone. I did play a few games in the first few years of having a computer... but rarely play games these days. I was never in the big new fancy games because I was always behind in computer power. I never bought the latest computer. I buy the previous model so as to get it cheap. My extent of games was Simcity 3000 and Nascar 1999. Besides that... I like little games that I can play at any time when I want to take a 15 minutes break and relax a bit. Like... Spider Solitaire - Tetris - PacMania - Mahjong - Diamond mine - Agent 2002 I think that's about all I got. lol [Aussies2007]
Well what you've got is more than enough. Some of the games you listed I have also played...Simcity, Solitare are two of them. I play mostly LAN games, like Counter-strike and Generals. I also play games on my PS console, PS1 and PS2. I prefer mostly RPG games, like Final Fantasy and others. Right now, I'm into online games, we have local game developers here who put up online games that are unique and quite enjoyable. I think the game title was RF Online or simply, RISING FORCE Online. I'm still trying to get the hang of it, but I think I'm starting to like it.. I play them when I know I feel bored, has nothing to do and was looking for more enjoyment. I used to play them all day back then, as I used to be a game addict. But have refrained for so many years now, since I have learned new stuffs to enjoy at and make myself busy as I grew older!;) [raijin]
Well you certainly sound like an experienced gamer and in a whole other league from where I am. The on-line games are not something I have explored and at this point I probably won't. As I mentioned to the programmer...I do my best keep my personal and professional commitments in balance and I like the freedom of playing games when I am of a mind to do so...and then leaving them for as long as I have other things I want to do. Hi Raia, That's a good question, I do play some games in the computer, but I am not that good at playing it. I like playing card a lot , so I will go to the internet game center to play card often. Normally, I would play 1 hour per day. The only games I play are on Pogo. and every week we work for badges and we build up points that we may some time win some money lol never have yet. Just won thier wall papper which I dont want!. I used to like pinball andpacman, and one calle dcentipide but they have gone out of style and dont find them any more on the puter , I dont havea ploaystation or that otehr one so I save moeney not having to buy games for them lol Have to stick with playing in Pogo. I am very much a Tombraider fan !! Ever since that first memorable time when, glancing over my son's shoulder, I saw the character who would take up so much of my free time, Lara Croft !! It was like...WHAM !!! It was a instant addiction!!!! I can honestly say, Tombraider helped me get my life back on track after a prolonged period of depression I was going through. I have a very loving and understanding wife who knew this game, (TR one at that time)was doing me more good than any tablet or pill could ever do.I also love games such as Resident evil, and, Silent Hill. I have to say right now that I love computer games and online gaming is my favorite, I prefer Pogo for gaming, but I also like Big Fish Games, and slingdot I love arcade type games, word games, and gmaes like tetris. I just tried a new game today from Pogo sim bounce blaster or something like that , and it was a blast, and I have to say right now that I was disappointed that it was only a 30 minute trial instead of an hour trial. I like word games mostly. I play games like Bookworm, Word Drop, Text Twist. But I also like Bejeweled and Mah Jong. I am not into role playing games. Games that make you think are actually healthy. They exercise your mind which can help prevent Alzheimer's. The mind is a muscle that needs to be exercised just like every other muscle in your body. It also needs to be at rest at times too. I have played various computer games ranging from first person shooter like counter strike,hitman,max payne etc to real time strategy like red alert,stronghold,commandos etc. Real time strategy games require a lot of time from you and if you are really not good at ti you will not play it for long.I mostly enjoy first person shooting games like the best i played was max payne II. Thank you for your kind welcome !! As for the games I mentioned, I think just about everyone has heard of the Tombraider games. The dark passages and secret rooms, the puzzles, and let's not forget about the 'nasties!!'Rule of rose is a very difficult game to describe. It is a very weird game, but very addictive. I could not possibly do the game justice by me trying to describe it. I suggest you 'google' it !!!! The people I have told about this game have all 'googled' it, and as in all games, you get good and bad responses. I must point out that this game has been banned in some countries because of the content. I find it rather sad that most of the people who call for games to be banned, have never actualy played the game themselves. Rule of rose should not have been banned at all !!! There are far worse games out there, Resident evil for one !!! And yet games such as Resident evil, Silent hill etc etc, are known and loved by millions of gamers world wide. They are a form of escapism that we all need in todays mad bad world.So, all I can say to you Raia, that regarding RoR, just read the reviews, and give it a 'google' !! Another of my favourite games is "Alone in the dark, the new nightmare". It is a very atmospheric game, and very un-usual because you can play it in two totaly different, but equaly terrifying adventures combined in one. A very clever well thought out game !!!! I play a lot of mahjong, tetris, scrabble and bejeweled online. I use to play cribbage and poker/texas holdem but don't have time for that anymore. Nowdays its playing games with my son on his playstation and that is a lot of fun too. I consider myself as a computer game addict. I really play a lot of computer games. These are the games I really love to play - Diablo I and II, Startcraft and Broodwar (Watch out Starcraft 2), Warcraft (from the Tides of darkness until the Frozen Throne and Defense of the Ancients), Sacred, Stronghold I and II, Neverwinter Nights to Morrowind, Half-Life, Counter strike, Condition Zero, Quake 3 Arena, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault and expansion, Call of Duty, BattleFiled 1942, Heroes of might and magic II and III, BattleRealms: Winter of the wolf, SWAT 3 and 4, GTA 3 and San Andreas and Vice City, Red Alert I and 2, Yuri's Revenge, Command and Conquer, The old ones: DukeNukem 3d, Earthworm Jim, Raptors, and a LOT of NEs, SNEs Emulator Games(Legend of Zelda, Mortal combat, Bomberman, etc) and some I forgot. Playing time usually depends. If RPG like Diablo I would let my computer rest for just around 6-8 hours(that's the time I sleep as well). Other game varies from 30 minutes to 15 hours straight. Before, I eat while playing and had no time to clean myself. Well, that was before. When I graduated, my playing time gradually decreased. Now, I haven't played a single game for a week. The fact that you have been able to wean yourself off them show you are not truly addicted in my view. When my hubby and I get into a new game we also go for long hours at a stretch in sheer enjoybment! However, like you when we have other responsibilities to attend to we stop gaming do that first...then return for another round as time permits. I am an intense gamer.....I play games for hours and hours together.My record was 28.5 hours continous play and the game was Age of Empires. I can't get into video/computer games. I've tried. I would like to try the biofeedback games, Journey to the Wild Divine and Vision Quest. You unlock areas of the brain not by solving puzzles but by your heart rate and such. There are also two games I won from a contest for NintendoDS called Zenses - I have the Rainforest and Ocean one. My husband is absolutely addicted in what I think of as an unhealthy way. He plays World of Warcraft and prefers that world to our own. He is literally on the game whenever he is not at work or sleeping. Occasionally glancing away to look at the other screen - the huge television he bought. He grunts and says short sentences to my toddler and I whenever he isn't in a crucial portion of his game, otherwise he remains silent. During the week, he gets home from his swing shift on base at around twelve, takes a shower and gets online to the game, plays until the morning light, then sleeps until work the next day. During the weekend he keeps the same schedule, only he's free to sleep until four or five pm. I knew a couple, I'd met the wife in Massage Therapy school on base - who actually wanted to get together with us to play role playing games like D and D and go hiking and such but we lost them. They wanted a couple to do things with but the first thing out of my husband's mouth (which he repeated a lot) as we got ready (as anything scheduled he usually had forgotten about it no matter how many times I reminded him and he said okay) he would say"we're not staying long" Its hard finding friends when you're married, so they were disappointed. If its just a boy or a girl it can be awkward. Anyway, the wife of the couple had done what you had, first she resented her husband's playing WOW but soon gave in and they both played for long hours while their baby/toddler played independently. Every so often she has to quit because it takes over her life. She doesn't work and their son goes to preschool so she has all day to play. I tried too - not with wow but MYST, but you know it takes all of your concentration and as a mom, I need to be able to be aware of our toddler, and to interact whenever he wants to. I do sweeping at times, or mylot but don't need to give it my entire concentration. And I just can't sit and do the same thing for that amount of times. If it weren't for dyspraxia, I'd learn to drive and take my little one all about my SW state. Lotsov attractions. That's what I'm used to, exploring with friends, hiking and things like that. My past partners were a lot more physical. My husband prefers locking himself away in his mind and the physical world isn't really for him. I prefer getting out and doing that or reading to video games I guess. Might be my Aries nature, not sure. I don't have that kind of concentration. Even studying, if I had to sit and cram for hours like some students, I'd fail, I write little bits of info on three by five cards and study a little at a time and do well.
